A large number of road and bridge projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) remain incomplete in Arunachal Pradesh. The state’s Rural Works Department (RWD) informed the legislative assembly that 146 roads and 54 bridges are yet to be completed across different districts.
The information was shared during the ongoing budget session of the state assembly while replying to a question raised by MLA Laisam Simai. According to the department, under PMGSY Stage I, a total of 45 roads and 19 long-span bridges (LSBs) are still pending. Under Stage III, another 101 roads and 34 bridges remain incomplete.
Among the districts, Kra Daadi has the highest number of unfinished road projects with 18 roads pending. It is followed by Longding and Papum Pare with 17 projects each. Kurung Kumey has 14 incomplete roads, while Upper Subansiri has 12 and Lower Siang has 9.
In terms of bridges, Kra Daadi again tops the list with nine unfinished bridges. Upper Subansiri has seven incomplete bridges, Kurung Kumey has six, and Lower Dibang Valley has five pending bridge projects.
The Rural Works Department said several measures are being taken to ensure that the pending works are completed as soon as possible. Regular review meetings are being held at both circle and state levels to monitor progress. Authorities have also issued notices to contractors who failed to complete work on time, and penalties are being imposed where necessary.
In deserving cases, contractors are being granted extensions of time according to contract conditions. Officials are also conducting field inspections to closely monitor project progress.
The department added that efforts are being made to release funds and clear pending bills to prevent work from stopping. In cases where contractors have repeatedly failed to complete projects, the government has started the process of re-tendering the work.
Additionally, the state government has provided gap funding in some cases to help complete stalled or delayed projects, with the aim of improving rural connectivity across Arunachal Pradesh.
