Aohali village becomes Arunachal Pradesh’s first zero-hunting zone

In a pioneering move for Arunachal Pradesh, Aohali village in the Mebo Sub-Division has declared itself a zero-hunting zone, setting a remarkable precedent for environmental conservation in the state. This significant step was unveiled during the 56th Reh Festival of the Idu Mishmi tribe, marking a unique milestone for wildlife protection and sustainable living. The declaration was made official with the inauguration of a dedicated signage by local legislators, including Roing MLA Mutchu Mithi and Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng. The initiative is part of the broader Eco-Clean Mebo Mission (ECMM), a program designed to promote environmental awareness and the sustainable use of natural resources in the region. “This is a very good initiative,” said MLA Mutchu Mithi. “Our ancestors have lived amidst these forests and wildlife for generations, and it’s essential that we protect and preserve these valuable resources for future generations.”

Echoing his sentiments, MLA Oken Tayeng stressed the importance of community involvement in conservation. “This move is not just about banning hunting; it’s about creating value for our land and heritage. It’s about building eco-tourism and showing our commitment to safeguarding our natural environment,” he said. The village’s bold declaration has garnered support from various political figures. Pasighat East MLA Tapi Darang and Mariyang-Geku MLA Oni Panyang also commended the villagers’ efforts to safeguard their forests and wildlife. State Chief Minister Pema Khandu lauded Aohali’s commitment, recognizing it as the first zero-hunting village in Arunachal Pradesh. This initiative aims to curb the growing threats to local wildlife and help reverse the alarming decline in forest and animal populations.

The event, which drew significant attention, also attracted four French tourists who were impressed by the village’s hospitality and conservation efforts. Heku Umbrey, President of the Reh Festival Celebration Committee, extended his gratitude to the dignitaries for their support, highlighting the importance of collective action in protecting the environment.
