Army to lead pilgrimage expedition to Arunachal’s Topo Gonov peak

In a landmark collaboration blending cultural preservation, spiritual heritage, and national security, the Indian Army will lead a pilgrimage expedition to the revered high-altitude site of Topo Gonov peak (also known as Topo Gone) along the McMahon Line in Arunachal Pradesh’s Shi Yomi district. “Indian Army and Galo Welfare Society (GWS) have finalized the roadmap for the historic Topo Gonov pilgrimage (2,900 m) from January 19–24, 2026,”  a Defence spokesman said. “It is a landmark collaboration to preserve Galo heritage, spirituality and ensure safe passage to this sacred high-altitude site in Arunachal Pradesh,” he said.

Revered in Galo folklore as a sacred sanctuary for prayer, traditional rituals, and ancestral connection, Topo Gonov has long remained largely inaccessible due to its challenging terrain.

The Indian army is committed to ensuring the pilgrimage is conducted with the highest standards of safety, dignity, and logistical precision, the spokesman said. GWS Research and Documentation chairman Moi Bagra shared the historical significance of the Topo Gonov and how the peak has served as a vital ancestral landmark symbolising the resilience and heritage of the Galo people. Priest Mogi Ori emphasised the religious importance of the expedition, which aims to reconnect the community with a spiritual meridian that has been geographically challenging to access for generations. During the discussion, the opening up of the area by the Defence and Home Ministry for civilian access, development of tourism infrastructure, and strengthening of national security and territorial sovereignty were also discussed.
