Arunachal Pradesh observed the 62nd anniversary of the Battle of Nyukmadung on November 18, 2024, at the Nyukmadung War Memorial, nestled between Dirang and Sela Pass. The ceremony, set against the majestic backdrop of the Himalayas, paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the 62 Infantry Brigade, who fought valiantly on November 18, 1962, during the Sino-Indian War. The war memorial, marked by a towering 25-foot Chorten, commemorates the heroic efforts of the 62 Infantry Brigade, led by Brigadier Hoshiar Singh, who successfully repelled advancing Chinese forces. This day has become a symbol of courage and patriotism in India’s military history.
The commemoration began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial, attended by dignitaries, veterans, soldiers, and families of the martyrs. A cycling rally, ‘Trail of Remembrance,’ took place on November 17, with ex-servicemen and soldiers cycling 80 kilometers from the Nyukmadung War Memorial to the Phudung War Memorial, where they paid tribute to Brigadier Hoshiar Singh. Local schools organized sketching and speech competitions, encouraging young minds to reflect on themes of bravery and duty. These activities ensured that the legacy of the 62 Infantry Brigade continues to inspire future generations.
The final day of commemorations featured a vibrant cultural showcase, with students performing patriotic songs and dances, including a Tibetan dance by LDL Monastery, Dirang. The Indian Army soldiers wowed the crowd with a dynamic Bhangra performance and a Gatka martial arts display. The event also highlighted the vital role of military dogs, with the 30 SSB Battalion presenting a thrilling dog show, demonstrating the dogs’ agility and loyalty in military operations.
