Arunachal doctors join nationwide protest over Kolkata doctor’s murder

The Arunachal Pradesh Doctors’ Association (APDA) has joined the nationwide protest led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in response to the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor in Kolkata. The APDA’s East Siang District unit held a press briefing today at Bakin Pertin General Hospital to express their solidarity with the victim and demand justice.

The press briefing was led by APDA President Dr. Komling Perme, along with Dr. T. Tali, President of the East Siang Unit, and General Secretary Dr. Keni Lego. They strongly condemned the heinous act of violence against medical professionals and voiced their support for the victim until justice is served. Dr. Perme highlighted that doctors in East Siang and other hospitals across Arunachal Pradesh have worn black badges to show their solidarity. The APDA has called for urgent and serious action against the perpetrators of this crime.

On August 9, a 31-year-old postgraduate doctor was discovered dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The autopsy revealed signs of sexual assault, with multiple injuries, bleeding from her eyes and mouth, and a broken pelvic girdle. The incident has sparked nationwide outrage, prompting the doctor community to go on strike, demanding swift justice and stronger laws to ensure workplace safety. In response to the crime, the IMA has announced a 24-hour nationwide shutdown of medical services, beginning August 17.
