The Arunachal Pradesh Government has enforced a complete ban on all weekly markets operating within the Itanagar Capital Region, following a high-level decision taken in a meeting chaired by the Hon’ble Home Minister of the state on April 30, 2025. The move is aimed at streamlining urban management, ensuring public order, and addressing persistent violations of previous directives.
In a formal notification issued by the District Administration under Order No. DC/ICC/Jud-01/2025, all permits and licenses that were earlier granted for the operation of weekly markets have been revoked with immediate effect. The decision comes in accordance with instructions from the Home Department (vide Memo No. HOME-12047/28/2022/176, dated May 7, 2025), which had reiterated that the operation of weekly markets must remain suspended across the state.
Authorities observed that despite repeated instructions, some market operators continued to function under different names. Notably, the “Google Daily Market” in Chimpu came under scrutiny for operating in a format similar to a weekly market. The administration has now clearly included this market under the scope of the ban, effectively shutting it down and setting a precedent for other such unauthorized setups.
“No weekly market activity shall be permitted in any sector, colony, or locality under the Itanagar Capital Region. Any individual or group found violating this order will face immediate legal and administrative action,” the district administration stated. Officials have made it clear that enforcement will be uncompromising.
To ensure the strict implementation of the directive, the Superintendent of Police of both Itanagar and Naharlagun, along with Extra Assistant Commissioners (EACs) and the Circle Officer of Banderdewa, have been given clear instructions to monitor and act against any violations.
