Marking a major leap toward sustainable transport, the Arunachal Pradesh government launched electric buses across five major towns on the occasion of World Environment Day. The initiative is part of the state’s broader push for eco-friendly infrastructure and cleaner urban mobility. Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein flagged off the electric bus fleet at a formal ceremony held at the State Banquet Hall in Itanagar. The event was attended by Transport Minister Ojing Tasing, MLAs from across the state, senior bureaucrats, and Itanagar Mayor Tame Phassang. The electric buses have been introduced in Itanagar, Namsai, Tezu, Pasighat, and Roing — selected for their growing urban populations and increasing demand for sustainable public transport. This marks the first time such an initiative has been implemented on this scale in the state.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy CM Mein said, “This is a proud moment for Arunachal Pradesh. The launch of these electric buses is a major step towards our vision of a green and sustainable Arunachal. We are committed to building an environment-friendly transport system that benefits both the people and the planet.” The new buses, powered by zero-emission electric motors, are designed to reduce air and noise pollution. Key features include low operational noise, improved energy efficiency, and an accessibility-friendly design with low floors for easy boarding and disembarking. A short film presented during the event highlighted these innovations and how they align with global clean energy standards.
Transport Minister Ojing Tasing noted that the state is aligning its urban development policies with India’s national climate goals. “These electric buses are not just about transport — they are about responsibility. Every ride on these buses is a step away from fossil fuels and a step closer to clean energy,” he said. Officials also confirmed that charging stations are being set up in each of the five towns to support the new electric fleet. The transport department is exploring further expansion of the electric bus network based on the success of this pilot phase.
