Widespread power outages in the Mebo Banggo and Monggu Banggo regions of Arunachal Pradesh have sparked growing unrest, with student unions now intensifying pressure on the authorities for urgent action. A joint meeting held on Tuesday brought together officials from the power department, Mebo administration, PRI leaders, and three prominent student organizations who voiced sharp criticism over what they termed “criminal neglect” of basic infrastructure.
The Adi Students’ Union (AdiSU), All East Siang District Students’ Union (AESDSU), and All Mebo Constituency Students’ Union (AMCSU) were represented by their leaders Tembo Lego, Kato Tayeng, Jipson Ngupok, and Kadum Perme. These unions demanded immediate restoration of power in the affected villages under the 39th Mebo Assembly Constituency, waiver of electricity bills for the month of June due to total non-supply, and urgent infrastructure upgrades to avoid future crises.
“This is not just about inconvenience. The lack of electricity has crippled essential services—education, healthcare, farming, even local markets,” said Tembo Lego and Kato Tayeng during the discussion. “We’ve had enough of empty promises. The people of Mebo deserve light and dignity.”
According to the student leaders, the issue dates back several months, with a detailed complaint submitted on June 20, 2024, highlighting frequent breakdowns, low voltage, and failure of transformers. The situation, they claimed, has since deteriorated into complete power blackouts lasting for weeks, with no communication or resolution from the concerned department.
