Arunachal Pradesh is set to commemorate the valiant sacrifices made during the 1962 Indo-China War at the Jaswant Garh War Memorial on November 17 and the Nyukmadung War Memorial on November 18, 2024. The commemorations will pay tribute to the heroic soldiers and local citizens whose courage and unity during the conflict continue to inspire generations. The events will highlight two pivotal encounters from the war: the Battle of Nuranang and the Battle of Nyukmadung, both emblematic of extraordinary valor. The Battle of Nuranang, fought on November 17, 1962, saw the heroic actions of Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat of the 4 Garhwal Rifles, who single-handedly held off enemy forces for 72 hours, for which he was posthumously awarded the Mahavir Chakra. Alongside him, Lance Naik Trilok Singh Negi and Rifleman Gopal Singh Gusain also displayed exceptional bravery, earning the Vir Chakra posthumously. Their courage has been immortalized in military history.

The Battle of Nyukmadung, which took place on November 18, 1962, underscored the resolute defense of India’s sovereignty, driven by the unwavering leadership of the Indian Army and the steadfast support of the local communities. The battle is remembered for its fierce fighting and the remarkable unity it fostered between soldiers and civilians.

In addition to the commemorative events, several initiatives have been organized to promote patriotism and strengthen civil-military relations. The closing ceremonies will feature cultural performances, with students from Jang and Dirang schools, along with troops from the SELA Brigade, presenting traditional dances and patriotic songs. A live re-enactment of the historic battles will further bring to life the valor of 1962, providing an immersive experience for all attendees.
