Arunachal to welcome the new year in Dong, where India first sees the sun

As the state administration organized the first Sunrise Festival 2025–2026 in the isolated Anjaw district close to the India–China–Myanmar tri-junction, Arunachal Pradesh will greet the New Year with the first rays of the sun at Dong village. Chief Minister Pema Khandu praised the increasing number of visitors to the Sunrise Festival in Dong Valley, describing it as a significant event that highlights the cultural and geographical distinctiveness of Arunachal Pradesh and promotes border tourism. The celebration will run from December 29 until January 2. The festival, which is being organized by the Arunachal Pradesh government in partnership with local people, intends to highlight Dong village, one of India’s easternmost inhabited villages and the site of the nation’s first dawn.

Dong village, which is tucked away in the Anjaw district’s far east, is extremely significant geographically, culturally, and strategically. The native Meyor tribe, who are renowned for their unique cultural customs and strong ties to the natural world, live in the village. According to the Chief Minister, the Vibrant Village Program would connect border towns and villages along the borders of China and Myanmar with top-notch infrastructure to enhance accessibility and quality of life. The proposed Frontier Highway, he continued, will greatly improve connectivity between isolated border communities, bolstering both national security and growth.

Khandu added that initiatives totaling more than Rs 1,000 crore are being carried out for the development of international border towns, with an emphasis on infrastructure, connectivity, tourism promotion, and the creation of livelihoods for local residents. The Sunrise Festival gives guests a unique look at life along India’s eastern boundary through cultural performances, traditional food, regional handicrafts, and outdoor activities. In addition to strengthening India’s position in strategically important border regions, the project is anticipated to increase sustainable tourism.
