The traditional cheese yak churpi from Arunachal Pradesh has received geographical indication (GI) registration (number 809), protecting its indigenous production methods and heritage. Made from locally sourced yak milk in Tawang and West Kameng, yak churpi symbolizes resilience and ecological harmony. Arunachal Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister, Chowna Mein, highlighted the GI tag as a significant milestone for mountain communities tied to yak culture and Himalayan ecology. The recognition is expected to enhance the cultural significance and marketability of yak churpi, safeguarding authentic production techniques while opening premium market opportunities. This registration contributes to preserving local heritage and promoting sustainable economic development in the region.
