A 12-hour bandh organized by the Galo Students’ Union (GSU) in Aalo, the administrative center of West Siang district, has caused significant disruption to daily life in the region. The purpose of the bandh was to exert pressure on the state government to activate the science stream at Donyi Polo Government College in Kamki and to appoint a permanent principal with full drawing and disbursing officer (DDO) authority at the Government Model College in Basar.
The main road was left empty, with shops, schools, and colleges shuttered, and government offices experiencing low attendance. GSU volunteers were observed obstructing the Sipu bridge leading into Aalo town by igniting tyres and conducting sit-ins. The Galo community has expressed criticism towards the state’s “lackadaisical approach,” asserting that the science stream remains inactive, thereby denying students opportunities within their own district.
