CM Thanks Upper Siang Communities as Hydropower Project Gains Local Support

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed gratitude to the 76 families of Karko village in Upper Siang district for signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government to support the preparation of the Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) for the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP). Khandu emphasized that the project extends beyond mere infrastructure, addressing energy security, flood moderation, regional development, and national interests. He acknowledged the significance of dialogue and community involvement, assuring that environmental and social issues will be carefully evaluated throughout the project’s stages. The MoU was signed at the DC Bungalow in Yingkiong, between Dumiin Nokar representing Karko village and Talo Jerang of the state government, backed by local officials and community members. Khandu praised the villagers for their cooperation, highlighting the importance of harmonizing development with community voices to benefit both the people and the preservation of their land and culture. This agreement is a pivotal step in advancing the SUMP, demonstrating a commitment to community engagement and responsible development practices.
