Energy Leap: Bangladesh Moves Ahead with New Russian Nuclear Agreement

The Government of Bangladesh has signed a $4.5 billion agreement with Russia to build the country’s second nuclear power plant in Patuakhali district, expected to be operational by 2032. This follows the Rooppur project, already under construction with Russian support.

Officials say the new plant will help meet rising energy demands and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. However, environmental groups have called for more transparency and public engagement.

This development is of strategic interest to India, which shares energy interconnectivity with Bangladesh, and to Bhutan and Nepal, which are focusing on clean hydro energy models.
