Flash floods, landslides likely as extreme weather grips east and south Arunachal districts

An impact-based weather forecast warning of thunderstorms with lightning and heavy to very heavy rainfall is in effect for the next three days in a number of Arunachal Pradesh districts, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here. Isolated locations in East Kameng, Kurung Kumey, Papumpare, Lower Subansiri, Lohit, and Longding are likely to see heavy rainfall of 7 to 11 cm in a 24-hour period, while Namsai, Tirap, and Changlang are likely to have extremely heavy rainfall of 12 to 20 cm. Papumpare, Lohit, and Changlang are expected to get extremely heavy rain on August 9–10, while Lower Subansiri and Anjaw are likely to experience heavy rains. While Papumpare and Lower Subansiri may see extremely high rainfall, West Siang, Siang, and Anjaw are likely to see significant rain between August 10 and 11. The IMD has issued a warning that severe weather events can result in low-lying areas experiencing waterlogging, poor visibility, traffic congestion, and brief disruptions to mobility owing to road flooding or tree uprooting.

In addition, there is a significant chance of flash floods, mudslides, and landslides, as well as harm to display boards, hoardings, tents, and other susceptible structures. Falling branches are expected to cause damage to power and communication lines, while agricultural effects could include soil erosion, seed displacement, poor germination from extended water stagnation, and damage to standing crops, especially horticultural produce. Authorities have urged residents to heed traffic advisories, reinforce susceptible properties, and stay away from places that are prone to flooding or landslides. In order to protect soil and roots, farmers have been advised to employ natural mulching materials like straw, allow enough drainage in cultivated areas, and, if at all possible, delay seeding.
