Historic Subansiri River Ride by Arunachal CM Signals State’s Rapid Progress

In a significant development for Arunachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Pema Khandu and his team embarked on a historic high-speed river journey spanning roughly 45 kilometers along the Subansiri River from the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric project to the Sibe-Rite confluence. This journey represents not just a milestone in the state’s tourism and development efforts, particularly in hydropower, but a moment of historical importance. The Chief Minister articulated his gratitude to all stakeholders involved, especially NHPC, the power developer.

Khandu described the event as a proud moment for the state, acknowledging its unprecedented significance despite the small gathering of participants. He tied the occasion to the broader strategic vision of development in line with the Government of India’s initiatives for a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) and “Viksit Arunachal Pradesh”. He emphasized the rich natural resources of the state and the government’s commitment to transforming these resources into sustainable revenue through clear policies.

The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, which began in 2001, serves as a cornerstone of this vision. After overcoming earlier challenges, such as protests, the project has regained momentum and is expected to generate 2,000 MW of power by December 2026, making it the largest in India. Furthermore, nearly 19,000 to 20,000 MW of hydro projects are underway across various stages in the state.

Khandu expressed gratitude for the support from districts like Kamle, Lower Siang, and Upper Subansiri for accepting significant investments. He highlighted that the Subansiri project boasts the country’s longest reservoir stretch, nearly 45 kilometers, a record potentially rivaled by the forthcoming Upper Siang Multipurpose Project.

In addressing the tourism potential, Khandu celebrated Arunachal Pradesh’s natural beauty and biodiversity, emphasizing the coexistence of tribal communities with nature as a heritage needing preservation amid rapid development. He underscored the role of hydropower as a clean energy source crucial for energy security, particularly amidst global uncertainties.

The government plans a comprehensive regional survey to develop a master plan for sustainable tourism, including consultations with local communities while adhering to land classifications like community lands and reserve forests. Proposed enhancements for tourism include eco-friendly infrastructures, luxury resorts, water sports, and high-end recreational activities.

Drawing comparisons with established tourist sites, Khandu mentioned that these initiatives could catalyze revenue generation and job creation. He indicated that efforts to enhance the region’s accessibility to tourists, filmmakers, and investors would be initiated, with expectations of attracting content creators to showcase Arunachal Pradesh on larger platforms.

In closing, Khandu praised the Hydro Power Department for orchestrating the event and urged all stakeholders for collaborative, well-planned, and community-driven development efforts.
