Itanagar civic body orders hotels, restaurants to drop meat references from names

In a new directive aimed at regulating business naming practices, the Itanagar Municipal Corporation has asked all hotels and restaurants in the capital region to avoid using names that directly refer to specific types of meat such as pork, chicken, beef, or mutton. The order was issued by Joint Commissioner Datum Gadi, who stated that several establishments have been obtaining trade licences with names that highlight particular animal meats. The civic body said such naming practices are not in line with acceptable standards and may go against sensitivities related to animal welfare and public decency.

Citing provisions under the Arunachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 2019, the corporation has directed all existing businesses with such names to change them and adopt more general and appropriate titles. It also made it clear that no new trade licences will be approved if the proposed name includes references to specific animal meats.Officials said the move is part of a broader effort to standardise naming norms and ensure that business identities remain neutral and suitable for all sections of society. The order also instructs all hotel and restaurant owners to update their signboards, branding, and promotional materials in line with the new rules. A deadline of ten days has been set for compliance from the date of issue.

Authorities have warned that failure to follow the directive may lead to legal action under relevant municipal laws and bye-laws. The order has been shared with the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and other officials for proper monitoring and implementation.
