In the vibrant political landscape of Tezu, the National Peoples Party (NPP) candidate, fondly known as ‘Bhaiya’ Karikho Kri, is emerging as a formidable opponent to his rival, former Minister Dr. Mahesh Chai of the BJP. Karikho Kri, the incumbent MLA and candidate for the NPP, has earned a reputation for his consistent electoral victories and inclusive approach to development. Popularly referred to as ‘Bhaiya’ by the locals, he has garnered widespread support across the diverse communities of Tezu-Sunpura assembly constituency, located in the Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh. Renowned as a beacon of inclusive governance, Tezu is often hailed as a ‘mini India,’ boasting a diverse population with a majority from other states and a significant indigenous presence. Karikho Kri’s track record of service spans over a decade, having secured victories in the 2004 and 2009 elections while serving in the opposition. However, he faced defeat in 2014 against Dr. Mahesh Chai of the BJP, who held key portfolios including Health Minister in the state government.
In the current electoral contest, Karikho Kri faces formidable opposition from candidates representing both the BJP and the Congress. Despite the tough competition, he continues to enjoy widespread support from citizens belonging to all communities. His reputation as a leader who is accessible and compassionate transcends religious and cultural boundaries, as he actively participates in and supports various festivals and cultural events, including Chat Pujas, Bhai Duj, Diwali, Holi, Eid, Durga Puja, Christmas, and Tamaladu festivals.
Karikho Kri’s commitment to development is evident through his proactive initiatives, which include infrastructural enhancements such as the upcoming district hospital in Tezu, improvements in schools, the establishment of educational institutions like the IG College, stadium construction, and the implementation of schemes like Jal Jeevan Mission. Notably, he has also prioritized providing assistance to women during labor, regardless of their caste or religion.
