NSCN(IM) cadre surrenders in Arunachal’s Changlang, hands over weapon and ammunition

In a significant development in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district, a cadre of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah) surrendered before security forces, officials said. The surrendered militant has been identified as 30-year-old Jungron Chena, a resident of Manmao village in the district. According to Superintendent of Police Kirli Padu, the surrender took place on March 30 in the presence of senior police officials and personnel of the Assam Rifles. Officials said Chena voluntarily laid down arms and expressed willingness to return to normal life. During the surrender, he handed over a .32 mm pistol, one magazine, five live cartridges, and a mobile handset along with a SIM card.

Police sources revealed that Chena had a history of association with insurgent groups in the region. He had first joined the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Reformation) in 2015. After several years, he switched allegiance to NSCN(IM) in 2022 and continued his activities under the group until his recent surrender.Security officials said such surrenders indicate a gradual shift among some cadres who are choosing to leave the path of violence. Authorities have been encouraging militants to give up arms and join the mainstream through various rehabilitation measures. Following the surrender, a joint interrogation has been launched by the police and Assam Rifles to gather more information about insurgent networks and movements in the region.

Officials said the questioning may help in understanding the structure and activities of underground groups operating in Changlang and nearby areas. Police further stated that operations against insurgent groups will continue, while efforts are also being made to motivate more cadres to surrender peacefully.
