Police in Arunachal Pradesh resorted to baton charges and tear gas on Thursday to control violence during the All Nyishi Students Union (ANSU) elections after supporters of a disqualified candidate turned unruly. The unrest erupted when Romesh Maga, a candidate for the vice president post, was disqualified from the election. Supporters of Maga burned tires and set a private vehicle ablaze near Siddharth Hall, prompting police intervention.
“We had to use batons and fire five tear gas shells to disperse the crowd,” said Capital Superintendent of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh. Two individuals involved in the violence were detained, and order was restored shortly afterward. The elections for ANSU’s new executive body continued without further disruptions. “The situation is now under control, and voting is proceeding smoothly,” added Singh.
A case has been registered at Itanagar police station regarding the incident. ANSU elections often draw significant attention, reflecting the political aspirations and involvement of youth in the region.
