Roing set to host first national cycling event as 450 riders prepare for mountain bike championship

Roing town in Arunachal Pradesh is preparing to host its first-ever national-level cycling competition as the 22nd National Mountain Bike Championship is scheduled to be held from February 12 to 15, 2026. The championship will take place at StoneHill in Roing and is expected to witness the participation of nearly 450 cyclists, including riders from different parts of India as well as a few international participants.

Sports officials and local authorities have described the event as an important moment for the district, as it marks the first time Roing will host a national cycling championship. Preparations for the four-day event are currently in the final stage, with organisers working on race tracks, accommodation arrangements, security planning, and transportation facilities for visiting teams and officials.

Vice-President of the Arunachal Cycling Association, Wangdi Dorjee Khrimey, said that the event is a matter of pride for the state and the local community. He appealed to the residents of Roing to cooperate with organisers and extend full support so that the championship can be conducted smoothly. According to him, the involvement of the local community will play an important role in handling logistics, hospitality, and coordination during the event.

Officials said that the championship will bring together professional riders, coaches, and sports officials from across the country, giving Roing an opportunity to present itself as a capable host for large sporting events. The natural landscape of the region, with its hills and challenging terrain, is considered suitable for mountain biking competitions, and organisers believe that participants will find the course both competitive and scenic.

Local businesses and tourism stakeholders are also hopeful that the event will bring positive economic activity to the town. With hundreds of participants and visitors expected to arrive, hotels, transport services, restaurants, and small traders are likely to see increased demand during the championship period. Tourism officials said that the event may also encourage adventure sports enthusiasts to visit the region in the future.

Sports authorities in Arunachal Pradesh have been working in recent years to promote cycling and other outdoor sports across the state. Hosting a national championship is seen as a step toward strengthening sports infrastructure and encouraging young athletes to take part in endurance sports. Officials believe that the successful organisation of the event could open the door for more national and international competitions to be held in the state.

Khrimey expressed confidence that the championship will not only highlight the sporting potential of Arunachal Pradesh but also showcase the hospitality and organisational ability of the local community. He said that if the event is conducted successfully, Roing could become a regular venue for adventure sports competitions in the coming years.
