The Asam Sahitya Sabha announced a series of landmark cultural and literary initiatives, including the publication of a revised and expansive history of Assam and the Assamese people. The declarations were made on the second day of the centenary celebrations of the historic Chandrakanta Handique Bhawan.
Sabha president Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami said the organisation intends to bridge long-standing gaps in the historical study of Assam and the Northeast. “Historians have often been unkind to the northeastern part of Assam. That is why the Sabha will bring out a revised Assamese history as well as a revised history of Assam,” he told reporters.
Recognising the rapid rise of digital creativity, Dr. Goswami announced that the Sabha will begin compiling literary works published on social media into curated, formal book editions. Poems, stories, essays, plays and novels shared online will be selected and published across genres, offering official recognition to creative voices emerging from digital platforms. He noted that a substantial portion of contemporary literature now grows outside the boundaries of traditional print.
As part of its effort to integrate technology into literary activities, the Sabha will also release the first edition of the Chandra Kanta Dictionary on social media. The digital version will assist users by flagging spelling errors and offering instant corrections. “It will be a great help for students. A wrongly spelled word will appear underlined in red, and with one click the correct spelling can be found,” Dr. Goswami said.
Reiterating the Sabha’s commitment to innovation, he added that the organisation will continue adopting new technologies to preserve and promote Assamese language and culture. “The Assam Sahitya Sabha will never remain behind,” he remarked.
The Sabha further announced that its flagship journal, Asam Sahitya Sabha Patrika, will complete 100 years in 2026. To commemorate the milestone, a year-long programme centred on young writers has been launched, along with a special volume titled Jorhator Prokaxan.
The centenary programme was attended by eminent writers, former presidents and secretaries of the Sabha, and noted cultural scholars, marking a significant moment in Assam’s literary and cultural journey.
