Sunrise Festival in India’s easternmost village to welcome New Year

Tourists can welcome the New Year at Dong village in Arunachal Pradesh, India’s easternmost settlement and the first place to witness sunrise.

The inaugural Sunrise Festival will be held from December 29 to January 2, celebrating the country’s first sunrise of the New Year. Located in the remote Anjaw district near the India–China–Myanmar trijunction, Dong is home to the Meyor tribe.
The five-day, community-led festival will feature cultural performances, traditional sunrise rituals, adventure activities, guided treks, eco-camping, village tours, workshops, and local cuisine. With a strong focus on sustainability, the event follows the theme “No trash, No trace, No excuses” to promote responsible tourism.
Chief Minister, Pema Khandu said the festival aims to promote sustainable tourism, support local livelihoods, and establish Dong as a significant cultural and geographical landmark on India’s tourism map.
