Suspected NSCN (K-YA) militant killed in gunfight with Assam Rifles near Indo-Myanmar border in Arunachal

A suspected cadre of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (K-Yung Aung faction), or NSCN (K-YA), was killed during a fierce exchange of fire with Assam Rifles personnel in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district on Sunday. The encounter took place during a routine patrol operation by the Assam Rifles near the India-Myanmar border, a region that has long remained a sensitive corridor for insurgent activities. The incident occurred between the remote villages of Khogla and Lyangche in the thickly forested areas of Longding, officials confirmed. According to a senior official from the security establishment, the troops from the Wakka Company Operating Base (COB), under the jurisdiction of the Khonsa Battalion, were conducting a routine area domination patrol when they came under sudden attack.

“The patrol team was ambushed in dense jungle terrain by armed militants suspected to be from the NSCN (K-YA). Despite the suddenness of the attack, the troops showed exceptional alertness and retaliated effectively,” the official said. The patrol team immediately responded with a counter-assault, leading to a gunfight that lasted several minutes. The swift and coordinated action by the Assam Rifles personnel forced the insurgents to flee from their concealed positions deeper into the jungle, abandoning their temporary base. After the encounter, the security forces launched a detailed search of the area. During the combing operation, they discovered a makeshift hideout believed to have been used by the militants as a base for launching operations. The body of one suspected NSCN (K-YA) cadre was recovered from the site.

In addition, a considerable quantity of war-like stores—including automatic weapons, ammunition, and military-grade equipment—was found. The seized items included assault rifles, loaded magazines, communication devices, explosives, and survival gear, indicating a well-prepared militant group possibly plotting hostile operations in the border region.“The cache of arms and supplies recovered shows that the group had plans for sabotage or ambushes in the area. The proactive action of the Assam Rifles has likely foiled a larger threat,” said the official.
