Thailand’s Special Parliamentary Committee is deliberating three distinct approaches to tackle the complex issue of e-cigarettes, signaling a potential shift in regulatory strategy. Led by Mr. Niyom Wierathandithakul, Phrae MP of the Party for Thailand, the committee’s composition of 35 members includes representatives from governmental bodies, civil organizations, and industry experts.

The committee’s proposals include maintaining the current ban on e-cigarettes with stricter enforcement, regulating heated tobacco products (HTPs) alongside e-cigarettes, or implementing comprehensive regulations covering both categories. These proposals come in response to the persistent use of e-cigarettes in Thailand despite their legal prohibition.Dr. Human Leethiraprasert, committee secretary and head of the sub-committee on e-cigarette regulation, underscored the committee’s commitment to public health and safeguarding youth from exposure to these products. Proposed amendments aim to clarify legal definitions, strengthen enforcement mechanisms, and impose stringent controls on production and distribution.

In Itanagar, market observers are closely monitoring these developments, anticipating potential impacts on local markets and consumer behavior. The committee’s recommendations will undergo scrutiny in the House of Representatives, signaling Thailand’s proactive approach to regulatory reform amidst evolving societal challenges.
