Tourists flock to Arunachal’s snow-covered Sela Tunnel for a winter wonderland experience

Arunachal Pradesh is witnessing a surge in tourist footfall as the snow-covered Sela Tunnel has become a major attraction for travelers seeking a winter getaway. Nestled at an altitude of 13,000 feet, the tunnel, which consists of two separate passages, offers visitors a breathtaking view of the snow-clad Himalayan landscape.

The North and South portals of the Sela Tunnel, blanketed in thick snow, have turned into a picturesque retreat, drawing adventurers and nature lovers alike. The recent snowfall in Tawang’s mountainous terrain has made the region a preferred destination for those looking to escape the rising temperatures in other parts of the country.

For many, the weather is a key factor in choosing Arunachal Pradesh as a travel destination. As cities like Guwahati experience increasing heat, Tawang remains a cool haven, offering single-digit temperatures, crisp mountain air, and stunning white landscapes. The contrast in climate has made the region even more appealing for tourists from across India.

Tourism stakeholders emphasize the need to promote the region’s unique weather as a selling point. “Weather plays a big role in attracting tourists to the Northeast. The snow-capped mountains and fresh air create the perfect setting for an unforgettable journey to Tawang,” said Namgey Tsering, MLA of Tawang.

Travelers visiting the area are mesmerized by the serene beauty. A tourist from Chirang, Assam, described the experience as reminiscent of Switzerland. “While Assam is experiencing hot, humid weather, Tawang is still cool, with snow-covered peaks adding to its charm,” she shared.
