East Bengal’s Future Plans Stall as Emami Awaits ISL Calendar Amid League-Wide Uncertainty

The celebrations over East Bengal’s historic Indian Super League triumph have quickly given way to off-field uncertainty, with the club’s management making it clear that any long-term planning is on hold until the All India Football Federation provides clarity on the ISL’s calendar and structure.

The hesitation expressed by head coach Oscar Bruzon and several players has brought into sharp focus a broader administrative deadlock that is currently gripping Indian football. The future of the ISL remains unsettled as a new standoff emerges between the league’s franchises and the AIFF over commercial rights and broadcasting arrangements. A number of clubs are now strongly advocating for a model that gives them greater operational and commercial control, leaving the roadmap for the upcoming season in limbo.

This lack of direction has had a ripple effect across the league. Player contracts, renewals, and pre-season planning for multiple teams have effectively come to a standstill, with clubs unwilling to commit resources without a confirmed schedule.

Speaking on behalf of East Bengal’s investors, Emami Group’s Vibhash Agarwal stressed that the club cannot move forward on key decisions — including the coaching setup and squad retention — until there is formal communication from the governing body.

“Our future planning would depend on clarity from the AIFF regarding the ISL calendar and structure,” Agarwal said. “We need the ISL calendar first. I cannot speak hypothetically right now. It’s difficult to say anything at this stage.”

Agarwal acknowledged the concerns raised by Bruzon, who has stated he will only consider extending his stay if a concrete plan is in place by June 1. The uncertainty, he indicated, affects not just the coach but the entire ecosystem of players and support staff.

Despite the administrative deadlock, Agarwal made sure to keep the spotlight on the team’s achievement. He dedicated the club’s first national league title in 22 years to the East Bengal fanbase, crediting their relentless support through years of struggle.

The impasse now leaves East Bengal, along with other ISL sides, in a waiting game as the AIFF and clubs negotiate the league’s commercial and structural future. – PTI
