The Indian shooting fraternity is still reeling from the shock of legendary shooter and coach Jaspal Rana’s death. Amid that grief, another heartbreaking news has arrived. Just four days after Jaspal Rana’s death, his mother Shyama Devi Rana passed away.
78-year-old Shyama Devi Rana was undergoing treatment at an Army Hospital in New Delhi. According to family members, her health deteriorated significantly after the sudden death of her son Jaspal Rana on June 12.
A resident of Silamu village in Uttarakhand’s Tehri district, Shyama Devi Rana was the wife of Dronacharya Awardee coach Narayan Singh Rana. The family, closely associated with sports, has now had to endure two deaths within a span of just four days.
It may be noted that Jaspal Rana, who was serving as the High Performance Coach of the Indian pistol shooting team, had recently returned to the country from the ISSF World Cup held in Munich. After feeling unwell during the journey, he was admitted to a hospital in Delhi. Just when his health was said to be improving, news of his sudden death stunned the entire sporting world.
Jaspal Rana, who set a world record at the age of just 18 and rose to fame on the international stage, brought multiple laurels to the country at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and World Shooting Championships. After his playing career, he also played a significant role as a coach in grooming the new generation of Indian shooting.
The sporting world, already numbed by the grief of Jaspal Rana’s death, has now been plunged into deeper mourning with the news of his mother’s passing.
