She wants to return to her beloved wrestling mat. But what a misfortune! To do even that, Vinesh Phogat has reportedly had to engage in a legal battle. A week ago, the Delhi High Court, through a verdict, directed that Vinesh be allowed to join the selection camp for the Asian Games. However, the Wrestling Federation of India is not ready to accept that court ruling.
The Federation has approached the Supreme Court to counter the star player’s return. This development has triggered adverse reactions across the country’s sports community. Following the controversy at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Vinesh had announced her retirement. Subsequently, she entered politics and was elected as an MLA in Haryana on a Congress ticket.
However, after reconsidering her retirement decision and announcing her return to the wrestling mat, Vinesh faced obstacles. The Federation’s resentment toward the star athlete is long-standing. She had nurtured a dream of playing in the Asian Games. But the Federation, citing various excuses, blocked her path to participating in the Asian Games trials.
Protesting against this injustice by the Federation, she had won the legal battle in the High Court. However, after the Federation’s latest move, the hope of Vinesh’s return is now mired in deep uncertainty.
