Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Tai Tagak was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday after being the sole candidate in the fray for the state’s lone seat in the Upper House of Parliament.The declaration was made by Returning Officer-cum-Secretary of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Tadar Meena, after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations ended at 3 pm on June 11. Since no other candidate had filed valid nomination papers for the seat and Tagak did not withdraw his candidature within the stipulated period, he was formally declared elected in accordance with the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961.
Officials said the declaration was made under the relevant provisions governing uncontested elections, which allow a candidate to be declared elected when no other contestant remains in the field after the completion of the nomination and withdrawal process.Following the declaration, the official certificate of election was handed over to Tagak during a ceremony held at Nokmey Namati Hall in the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Secretariat in Itanagar. The event was attended by Chief Electoral Officer-cum-Observer Pawan Kumar Sain, Joint Chief Electoral Officer Liken Koyu, Assistant Returning Officer Longman Ronrang and several senior leaders and members of the BJP.
Tagak’s election further strengthens the BJP’s political presence in Arunachal Pradesh, where the party holds a dominant position in the state assembly. His unopposed victory reflects the party’s numerical strength and support within the legislative assembly, which elects members to the Rajya Sabha. Soon after being declared elected, Tagak called on Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Tesam Pongte. The Speaker congratulated him on his election to the Rajya Sabha and conveyed his best wishes for a successful parliamentary tenure.
