Even after the Assam government has taken strict steps against polygamy and enforced the law under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, some people are not paying heed to this law. In some places, there are even allegations of marrying not one, two, but up to three women. This time such an allegation has been raised against a businessman named Habizul Islam of Phatipur Laogaon Basti under Bangalmara Police Station in Lakhimpur district, of marrying for the third time despite having a first and second wife, alleged second wife Farha Begum. The second wife Farha Begum has already filed a written complaint against Habizul Islam with the Assam State Commission for Women on August 17 seeking justice.
Regarding this, victim Farha Begum said that she did not know at first that Habizul Islam was a married man. She married Habizul Islam in 2022. A year later, she came to know that Habizul Islam is a married man and he also has four children with his first wife who stays at her maternal home. After learning this, Habizul Islam physically and mentally tortured her and beat her severely. Finally in 2023 she left Habizul Islam. After that Habizul Islam brought his first wife to his home.
“He married me without divorcing his first wife, and now a few days ago, without divorcing both the first and second wives, Habizul Islam has married another woman for the third time. Since the Assam government has brought the UCC law, strict legal action should be taken against Habizul Islam who has committed polygamy under this law. I have filed FIRs against Habizul Islam at the local Bangalmara police station several times. But till date the police have not taken any action against Habizul. Why action has not been taken has now become a million-dollar question. Whose blessings does this cunning Habizul Islam have that he has dared to do so much, we are worried about it. Habizul Islam is also involved in various immoral and illegal activities. But till date, even the nearby Bangalmara police station has not been seen taking any action against Habizul. According to complaints made by some, Habizul Islam is also involved with fake gold and counterfeit notes. It has become a mystery why the police, acting like they are turning a blind eye, have not taken action against Habizul Islam. We suspect that some people from the police department may be involved with Habizul Islam.”
Expressing anguish as to from where Habizul Islam gets the audacity to repeatedly get married without divorce at a time when Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has given strict instructions to the police department to arrest those involved in polygamy as soon as a complaint is received, Farha Begum said that we now have faith in the Assam State Commission for Women. At least the Commission will provide us justice by taking strict legal action against Habizul Islam under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. She also requested that the Home and Police Department under the Chief Minister should also give importance to the matter and arrest Habizul Islam soon and arrange a high-level investigation regarding various anti-social activities against him including fake gold and counterfeit note rackets.
