Pema Khandu, the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh, reaffirmed his commitment to making Itanagar a modern, well-planned city by laying the foundation for phase-II of the government housing rehabilitation project. The new phase will cover B-Sector, C-Sector, P-Sector, and Niti Vihar. Khandu recalled the May 31 opening of the A-Sector multi-story complex, saying the project was the first step toward constructing safe, comfortable homes in place of dangerous, antiquated structures.
“Our vision goes beyond government quarters; affordable, earthquake-resilient, and dignified housing for all is our priority,” he said, warning those who were encroaching on government land and property that no one would be spared. 42 run-down type-III quarters will be replaced by 116 contemporary apartments, 48 type-II units, 66 type-III units, and two type-V units as part of the phase-II project. In order to promote communal living, the G+3 buildings will have guarded compounds, planted green spaces, ground-floor parking, seismic-resistant design, and improved waste management.
The Urban Development department is carrying out the project, which has a budget of Rs 80 crore and is expected to be finished by April 30, 2027. In addition to suggesting more positions to defend each of the 33 sectors of the Itanagar Capital Region and a specialized housing directorate to oversee government housing throughout the state, Urban Affairs Minister Balo Raja emphasized the importance of preserving government land throughout reconstruction.
He also demanded strong measures to prevent government employees from intruding and stringent quality control in construction. In addition to raising living standards, phase-II would reduce illegal land occupation, increase land-use efficiency, and provide land banks for future growth, according to Urban Affairs Commissioner Vivek Pandey.
