United Tani Army releases camp videos, displays weapons amid controversial demands

The recently formed United Tani Army (UTA), an armed group, has released videos showcasing its training camps and weaponry, intensifying concerns among security agencies. The videos, shared by UTA Chairman Anthony Doke, depict temporary camp structures stocked with arms and ammunition, though their exact location remains undisclosed. The release comes days after the UTA issued a statement opposing the construction of mega dams, the issuance of Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificates to non-Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe (APST) offspring, and demanding the relocation of Chakma-Hajong refugees. The group is also advocating for union territory status for areas inhabited by the Tani tribes.

In an interview accompanying the video release, Doke criticized the Indian government for neglecting Tani tribal areas. He promised to reveal a “detailed plan” outlining the UTA’s objectives and activities in the coming weeks. Security officials suspect Doke, believed to be operating from Myanmar, is reviving the UTA with assistance from Naga militant groups, including the NSCN (K-YA). “The camps resemble those of the NSCN (K-YA), suggesting a possible alliance,” an official noted.

Doke’s recent activities have heightened vigilance among security forces. “Since his relocation to Myanmar last year, we’ve been tracking his movements. His strategy of using media statements and videos to attract youth poses a significant challenge,” a senior official said.
