Remote Vijoynagar in Arunachal gets electricity through new micro hydro project

One of Arunachal Pradesh’s most remote frontier regions has finally been connected to electricity with the commissioning of the 2×250 kW Sirit Micro Hydro Scheme (MHS) in Vijoynagar circle of Changlang district.

Announcing the development on Friday, Miao-Vijoynagar MLA Kamlung Mossang described the project as a landmark achievement in extending essential infrastructure to one of the state’s most geographically isolated areas.

Located along the India-Myanmar border and surrounded by the dense forests of Namdapha National Park, Vijoynagar has remained cut off from mainstream connectivity for decades due to its difficult terrain.

Mossang said the availability of electricity would transform the lives of local residents by improving education, healthcare, communication and livelihood opportunities, while also paving the way for economic growth in the region.

Officials said the new power supply is expected to boost sectors such as eco-tourism, organic farming and horticulture, creating fresh opportunities for sustainable development in the border area.

The project was executed jointly by the Hydro Power Development Department and the Power Department to harness the region’s small hydro potential and provide reliable electricity to remote villages.

Built at an estimated cost of over Rs 14 crore, the Sirit Micro Hydro Scheme will benefit more than 1,500 people living in eight villages—Dara Gaon, Dawodi, Phaparbari, Gahrigaon, Hazolo, Ramnagar, Buddhamandir and Vijoynagar headquarters.

Mossang expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein for prioritising infrastructure development in border areas and commended the engineers and officials who completed the project despite significant logistical challenges.
