BJP Reaches 100 Seats; Gaurav Gogoi Falls Short in Jorhat

The BJP- led NDA is surging ahead in early trends, leading in around 100 seats as counting progresses, putting it forcefully on course for a decisive palm in the 126- member Assembly. Counting began at 8 am across 40 centres in 35 sections, where 722 campaigners are in the fray. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, querying from his fort Jalukbari, is aiming for a third successive palm. Among other crucial contenders, State Congress chairman Gaurav Gogoi is seeking his Assembly debut from Jorhat, while AIUDF principal Badruddin Ajmal has returned to state politics, querying from Binnakandi after losing the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat in 2024. Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi is looking to retain Sibsagar, and Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary is querying from Tamulpur.

The ruling NDA alliance comprises the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and Bodo Peoples’ Front (BPF). The BJP has contended campaigners in 90 seats, while AGP and BPF are querying 26 and 11 seats independently. On the other side, the opposition alliance is led by the Congress, which has contended 99 campaigners, along with Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI(M), and APHLC. Other parties in the fray include the AIUDF with 30 campaigners, AAP and UPPL with 18 each, Trinamool Congress with 22, and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha with 16. also, 258 Independent campaigners are querying, adding to the competitive geography.

The choices, held on April 9, witnessed a record name turnout of 85.91, including the loftiest- ever womanish participation at 86.5, reflecting strong public engagement. Exit pates had projected a comfortable palm for the NDA, with estimates ranging between 88 and 100 seats. The BJP alone is anticipated to crop as the single- largest party with 70 – 80 seats, while the Congress- led alliance is projected to secure between 24 and 36 seats. As counting continues, the trends suggest that the NDA is well- deposited to retain power with a strong accreditation, buttressing its political dominance in the state.
