In a major step towards reducing plastic waste and encouraging sustainable consumption, the Tawang district administration has issued an order banning the use of single-use PET (polyethylene terephthalate) water bottles below two litres in capacity.
The order, issued by Tawang Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo on Tuesday, stated that the sale, distribution and supply of single-use plastic drinking water bottles with a capacity of less than two litres will be prohibited across the district from July 1.
The ban will apply to all government offices, educational institutions, commercial establishments, event organisers, hotels, restaurants, shops, vendors and the general public.
The district administration has directed government departments, educational institutions, hotels, restaurants and event organisers to make alternative arrangements, including water dispensers, refill stations, water filters and larger-capacity water containers.
The order stated that surprise inspections will be conducted by officials of the district administration and concerned departments to ensure strict compliance.
Violations of the order will invite action under relevant provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, the Arunachal Pradesh Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Bye-laws, 2023, and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. Authorities may seize prohibited plastic items and impose penalties as prescribed under the law.
The administration has appealed to residents, businesses and other stakeholders to cooperate in implementing the initiative and contribute towards reducing plastic pollution in the district.
