At least 40 people were killed after a passenger bus plunged into a deep ravine in Pakistan’s Balochistan, in one of the country’s deadliest road accidents in recent times. According to local authorities, the bus was travelling through a mountainous stretch when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and fall into the gorge. Emergency responders, police personnel and local residents launched a large-scale rescue operation to recover victims and assist survivors, with the injured rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials said the death toll could change as rescue efforts continued and some of the injured remained in critical condition. Preliminary investigations suggested that speeding, difficult terrain or possible mechanical failure may have contributed to the accident, although the exact cause is yet to be determined. Authorities have ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident to establish the circumstances leading to the crash. Road accidents are relatively common in Pakistan’s mountainous regions due to narrow highways, challenging driving conditions, vehicle maintenance issues and occasional traffic rule violations. Messages of condolence poured in from government officials, who expressed sympathy with the families of the victims and directed local authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for those injured. The tragedy has once again highlighted concerns over road safety and the need for stricter enforcement of transport regulations to reduce fatalities on the country’s highways.
