NHRC complaint filed over alleged custodial torture of Arunachal anti-drug activist

A complaint has been filed before the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) alleging custodial torture of Arunachal Pradesh-based anti-drug activist Gumin Mize at Bihpuria Police Station in Assam’s Lakhimpur district.

The complaint was lodged by Buteng Tayeng, who alleged that police personnel subjected Mize to physical assault, verbal abuse and denied him proper medical examination while he was in custody.

The petition urged the NHRC to conduct an independent and transparent inquiry into the alleged incident and take strict action against the officials found responsible.

According to the complaint, Mize sustained serious injuries during his detention at the police station. Photographs circulating on social media, purportedly showing bruises on his body, triggered outrage and strong reactions across Arunachal Pradesh.

Several civil society organisations, student bodies and anti-drug groups have condemned the alleged incident and demanded accountability. Activists and supporters have also sought immediate intervention by human rights authorities and close monitoring of the investigation process.

Mize is known in Arunachal Pradesh for his anti-drug awareness campaigns and activism against substance abuse. Following the allegations, various organisations and local residents have extended support to him and called for justice.
