India-US Trade Agreement: Piyush Goyal Shares A New Update

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Tuesday that India is in discussions with the United States regarding a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), although dates for the sixth round of negotiations have not been confirmed yet. Speaking at an event focused on sustainability in Delhi, Goyal mentioned that five rounds of talks have taken place since discussions began in March. The next round, initially scheduled for August 25, was postponed after the US imposed a 50% duty on Indian goods starting August 27.

Goyal also highlighted India’s ongoing trade negotiations with several other countries, including the European Union, Chile, Peru, New Zealand, Oman, and a second phase with Australia. He emphasized India’s growing global economic role, contributing 18% to worldwide growth. Addressing sustainability, Goyal criticized certain nations for moving away from their environmental commitments, reaffirming India’s dedication to a sustainable growth model, which he believes will enhance competitiveness.

On India-China relations, Goyal noted that ties are gradually returning to normal following Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping’s meeting at the SCO summit, where both leaders agreed to resolve border issues and strengthen trade ties.
