Indian Railways, led by the West Central Railway zone, is set to introduce a streamlined token-based reservation system for counter-based Tatkal ticket bookings effective August 1, 2026, eliminating the hassle of double queues for last-minute travelers. Under the existing process, passengers were forced to visit railway reservation counters twice—first early in the morning to collect a queue token and later to complete the actual ticket purchase—causing severe station overcrowding and vulnerability to touts. The revised framework synchronizes token distribution directly with booking times, issuing non-transferable tokens for AC classes from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM ahead of 10:00 AM bookings, and non-AC tokens from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM ahead of 11:00 AM bookings. To prioritize genuine travelers, the system establishes a two-tiered priority structure: Category A prioritizes passengers booking for themselves or immediate family members with valid photo identity proofs, while Category B serves general agents and others only after Category A applications are completed. Each counter will initially distribute 10 tokens for AC classes and 15 for non-AC classes, allocating any remaining Tatkal quota berths on a first-come, first-served basis once token holders finish their transactions. Railway authorities emphasize that these changes apply exclusively to physical station counters to enhance transparency and curb black-marketing, leaving online Tatkal bookings via the IRCTC portal and mobile app completely unchanged.
