The investigation into the death of Sub-Inspector Nabajit Das, officer-in-charge of the Laisong police outpost in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, has taken a significant turn with police arresting five people, including an alleged wholesale drug dealer from Juria.
Das was killed after being hit by a vehicle while he was conducting a night naka-checking operation. The incident was initially suspected to be a road accident. However, the subsequent investigation has raised the possibility that the police officer may have been deliberately targeted.
Following the incident, police launched a series of operations and arrested Selim Uddin, who has been identified as the main accused. According to police sources, Uddin is allegedly a wholesale drug dealer and is suspected of being involved in a drug network operating in Juria.
Four other people have also been arrested in connection with the case. They have been identified as Uddin’s brother Mohidul Islam, his father Abdul Kuddus Farazi, and two alleged associates — Muffazzol Islam of Boriguri and Ruksana Khatun alias Pinki of Kadamoni Pathar, both in Juria.
Investigators are examining whether the alleged drug network had any role in the death of Das and whether the officer was deliberately targeted while conducting the naka-checking operation to prevent police action against the network.
The five accused are currently in police custody as the investigation continues. Police are also probing the circumstances surrounding the vehicle attack and the possible motive behind the alleged targeting of the officer.
The death of Sub-Inspector Das has sparked demands from various organisations for stringent action against those responsible. Several groups have also called for a thorough investigation into the alleged drug network and for all those found involved to be brought to justice.
