A Grand Celebration of Democracy in a Festive Spirit: Bengal Records a Historic 90% Voter Turnout in the First Phase

The first phase of voting for the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections witnessed a historic moment today. According to data available up to 5:00 PM, approximately 90 percent (89.93%) of voters in the state exercised their democratic franchise—a figure that has shattered all records set over the past several decades. The Election Commission has stated that the final voter turnout percentage is likely to rise further, as long queues persisted outside many polling booths even after the scheduled voting hours had concluded. Voting was successfully completed today across 152 constituencies, spanning the region from North Bengal down to South Bengal. From the very start of the day, the spontaneous presence of voters at polling booths across the state was truly remarkable. In particular, the unprecedented participation of women and young voters transformed this election into a veritable social festival.

Held under a tight security blanket, this phase of the election saw the strict vigilance of central forces deployed across the entire region. Although scattered reports of scuffles and tensions emerged from a few sensitive areas, the voting process remained largely peaceful overall. Voter turnout figures were being updated in real-time on the Election Commission’s dedicated portal—a dynamic process that left even political analysts astonished. Intense scrutiny and analysis have already begun regarding whether this massive voter turnout signals a specific political shift. Both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the principal opposition party, the BJP, are claiming this record-breaking turnout as a definitive sign of their own “assured victory.” However, the statistics make it abundantly clear that the common people of Bengal have personally joined this battle for democracy, turning out in force to fill the ballot boxes. This high turnout in the first phase has now set a formidable benchmark for the subsequent phases of the election. Now, all eyes are set on May 4th—the day when the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be opened to reveal the true verdict of the people of Bengal.
