Arunachal Wushu stars shine in Moscow, flag training gaps back home

Arunachal Pradesh’s top wushu athletes, Nyeman Wangsu and Mercy Ngaimong, brought pride to India after winning multiple medals at the International Wushu Championship, Moscow Wushu Star, held in Russia from April 17 to 21.

Nyeman Wangsu, a three-time National Games gold medallist, won three silver medals in the changquan, daoshu, and gunshu categories. Mercy Ngaimong, also a three-time National Games gold medallist, secured two silver medals in the jianshu and qiangshu events. Their performances stood out in a competitive international field and added to their growing list of achievements.

Both athletes have also cleared the preliminary trials for the upcoming Asian Games scheduled to be held in Japan later this year. The final selection trials are expected to take place in June. Officials believe that their recent performance in Moscow will strengthen their chances of making it to the final squad.

Despite these achievements, concerns have been raised over the lack of proper training facilities for wushu players in Arunachal Pradesh. The All Arunachal Pradesh Wushu Association (AAPWA) said that athletes from the state have been performing consistently well at national and international levels, but they continue to struggle due to poor infrastructure.

AAPWA general secretary John Tara Bakey said that there is no dedicated indoor wushu training hall in the capital region or in any other district of the state. He urged the authorities to set up a well-equipped indoor training centre so that athletes can train in better conditions.
