The Itanagar Police have apprehended another suspect in connection with a major minor sex trafficking case, raising the total number of arrests to 22, according to a senior police officer. The latest arrest involves 32-year-old Nandram Boro from Borolakhat village, under Sipajhar police station in Assam’s Darrang district. Superintendent of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh confirmed that Boro, identified as an assailant, was arrested two days ago and is now in judicial custody. Earlier this month, police busted an inter-state sex trafficking racket in Itanagar, arresting 21 individuals, including traffickers, pimps, and sexual assailants. During the operation, five minor girls were rescued. These girls, believed to have been trafficked via Assam’s Dhemaji district, were forced into prostitution in Itanagar. They have been placed in shelter homes for rehabilitation, SP Singh added, expressing grave concern over the continuing exploitation.
The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) has condemned the trafficking of minor girls, especially from the neighboring state of Assam. The Commission expressed “shock and anguish” at the involvement of local women and educated individuals in the crime.”It is also shameful to know that our own women and learned persons are involved in the case,” the APSCW stated. While commending the Itanagar Police for their effective efforts in apprehending those involved and rescuing the minors, the Commission urged the state government and relevant authorities to take stringent action against the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
The APSCW also called on authorities to monitor hotels, parlors, and other suspicious areas in and around the twin capital city to prevent future incidents.
