Seven-Day Shutdown in Manipur After Blast Claims Lives of Two Children

Public anger continues to escalate across Manipur as women-led civil society groups, the Meira Paibi, have expanded their shutdown call from five days to a full seven-day statewide bandh in protest against the deadly bomb attack in Tronglaobi, Bishnupur district.

The blast, which occurred earlier this month, claimed the lives of two young children and left their mother critically injured, sending shockwaves across the state and reigniting concerns over civilian safety amid ongoing unrest.

Describing the incident as “inhuman and unacceptable,” the Meira Paibi groups have demanded swift and decisive action from law enforcement agencies. They have set April 25 as a firm deadline for the arrest of those responsible, warning that any delay will be met with intensified agitation.

The extension of the shutdown reflects growing frustration among protesters, who accuse authorities of failing to make meaningful progress in the investigation. What began as a five-day protest has now evolved into a broader mass movement, drawing support from various sections of society.

“The silence and inaction are deeply disturbing. Justice delayed will not be tolerated,” members of the group stated during the protest.

The ongoing bandh has brought daily life in several parts of Manipur to a near standstill. Markets remain shut, public transport services have been severely curtailed, and educational institutions are facing disruptions. There are also concerns that essential services, including healthcare and supply chains, could be affected if the situation persists.

With the deadline approaching, pressure is mounting on the administration to deliver swift results and prevent further escalation in a state already grappling with prolonged instability.
