A new Plastic Waste Management Unit (PWMU) was inaugurated at Kawlkulha village in Mizoram by C Rosangliana in the presence of village council members, NGO representatives, and officials from the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED). The inauguration programme was chaired by Khawzawl Sub-Divisional Officer of PHED Freddy Vanlalmuanawma, while TBC Lalthangzawna presented the technical report on the project.
According to officials, the PWMU was established for the Khawzawl block under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) 2.0 fund and is intended to serve not only Kawlkulha village, which has around 850 households, but also nearby surrounding villages. The facility will continue to be managed by the WATSAN Committee, and user charges have already begun to be collected from households to support its operations.
The unit includes a plastic incinerator and a segregation shed, while future plans include purchasing bailing and shredding machines through revenue collected from user fees. During the programme, area representative Liantluanga Chohte and Senior Executive Engineer of PHED Khawzawl urged the public to make proper use of the facility and maintain it responsibly. He stressed that waste management cannot depend solely on the government and called on citizens to contribute their time, effort, and cooperation to ensure the project’s success.
Officials also highlighted the importance of implementing the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, to improve the safe and organised disposal of plastic waste across Khawzawl District and promote cleaner and healthier communities.
