6,000 rainbow trout released near Indo-China border in river Ranching drive

In a remarkable step towards promoting sustainable fishing and enhancing local livelihoods, the Department of Fisheries, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, joined hands with the Indian Army to carry out a river ranching program in the remote border town of Mechuka in Shi-Yomi district. Under the initiative, 6,000 Rainbow Trout fingerlings were released into the pristine waters of the Lamang River, located close to the Indo-China border. The move is expected to boost fish stocks in the river ecosystem and offer long-term benefits to local fish farmers as well as Indian Army personnel stationed in the region.

The program, held at the Government Trout Farm in Mechuka, also included free distribution of fish seeds to local farmers. Officials said the effort is aimed at strengthening food security, promoting eco-friendly aquaculture practices, and creating alternative sources of livelihood for people living in these high-altitude, strategically sensitive areas. Joyshil Taba, Director of Fisheries, who attended the event, called the initiative a major stride toward sustainable development. “This program promotes responsible fisheries management, ensures nutritional support, and strengthens bonds between local communities and the armed forces,” he said.

Representatives of the Indian Army, including Major Himat Singh from the 13 Grenadiers and Major Viplam of the 22 Sikh Regiment, participated in the event, underscoring the military’s role in community-building and ecological conservation. The army welcomed the program, emphasizing its importance in supporting the well-being of troops in remote postings and helping local populations build resilience. Local fish farmers expressed optimism about the program, noting that such efforts could help revive the traditional fish farming economy in the region and bring added economic benefits through improved access to fishery resources.
