Licence scam accused arrested after year-long evasion in Arunachal

Police in Arunachal Pradesh’s Naharlagun have arrested a 33-year-old man accused of cheating several people in a licence scam, after he remained on the run for more than a year.The accused, identified as Debojit Sharma, is a resident of Bihpuria in Assam’s North Lakhimpur district. He was arrested in connection with a case registered at Naharlagun Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.According to police officials, Sharma allegedly duped several individuals in the Doimukh and Naharlagun areas under the Itanagar Capital Region by promising to arrange pharmacy licences and other business permits. He is said to have collected large amounts of money from victims before disappearing from the area in 2023.

Police said the accused managed to evade arrest for over a year by frequently changing his location and using different mobile numbers. Investigators kept track of his movements through continuous surveillance, using both traditional methods and technical inputs.After months of tracking, police finally located Sharma at his residence in Pithaguri Mazgaon in Assam. He was arrested on April 10, reportedly when he had returned to cast his vote.The operation was carried out by a team from Naharlagun Police led by the investigating officer, along with other personnel, under proper supervision. The team also coordinated with local police in Assam to successfully carry out the arrest.

Following his arrest, Sharma was produced before the court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class in Naharlagun. The court has sent him to judicial custody.
