In order to obtain a pre-feasibility report (PFR) for a significant hydropower project, the Adi Students’ Union (AdiSU) has requested the assistance of Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu to remove paramilitary personnel stationed in the Siang and Upper Siang districts. The deployment of paramilitary forces for PFR for the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) was carried out without enough consultation with the project-affected villages, causing panic and disturbance, according to a memo that AdiSU submitted to the chief minister on Monday.
The students’ organization protested the suspension of many gaon burahs (GBs) and head gaon burahs (HGBs) and claimed that there had been unlawful encroachment on government school property in Boleng, Pangin, Kaying, and Pessing. The group called for paramilitary troops to leave school property, encroachers to be removed, suspension orders against GBs and HGBs to be revoked, and PFR operations to cease until the people of the 31 impacted villages were consulted.
