Wangsu Inaugurates Central Vaccine Depot and Disease Investigation Lab in Arunachal

Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development Minister Gabriel D. Wangsu on Wednesday inaugurated the Central Vaccine Depot-cum-Disease Investigation Laboratory (DIL), describing it as a major boost for farmers and livestock health in Arunachal Pradesh.
Calling the facility “a great asset for our state,” Wangsu said the laboratory is fully equipped with modern machinery for early detection and scientific management of animal diseases. He emphasized that timely diagnosis would serve as a protective mechanism for livestock and significantly reduce losses faced by farmers.
The laboratory’s core mandate includes early detection of livestock and poultry diseases, surveillance of zoonotic infections, outbreak investigation, and support to national disease control programs. It will also strengthen disease reporting systems and act as a vital link between field veterinarians and policymakers.
Routine testing will cover major diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), PPR, Brucellosis, and Classical Swine Fever, along with parasitic and bacterial infections. The facility will conduct post-mortem examinations, assist in outbreak response, provide technical guidance, and organize training and awareness programs for veterinary staff.
The lab has been strengthened under the Government of India’s Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP), with funding support of ₹43 lakh provided in two phases under the National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP). Construction was executed by the state’s Water Resources Department.
The department has also proposed upgrading the facility to BSL-2 standards, enhancing molecular diagnostic capabilities, integrating digital disease reporting platforms, and improving coordination with district laboratories to boost biosecurity and preparedness against emerging threats.
Expressing concern over the declining livestock population, particularly mithun—the state’s iconic bovine species—Wangsu urged greater attention to conservation and scientific breeding. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to cattle upgradation, improved production, and strengthening the livestock sector to meet growing market demands.
The inauguration marks a significant step toward modernizing animal healthcare infrastructure and safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods in the state.
